Etsy vs your own store
Your own WooCommerce store swaps Etsy’s per-sale fees for fixed monthly costs — and you have to bring your own buyers. Here’s where the lines cross for your shop.

How we calculated this
- Etsy on this $30.00 sale: $0.20 listing + $1.95 transaction (6.5%) + $1.15 processing (3% + $0.25) = $3.30.
- On your own store the same order pays about $1.17 in card processing (2.9% + $0.30, typical US Stripe/WooPayments rate) — but you pay hosting, apps and marketing every month.
- Each order saves $2.13 in fees, so your own store's $284.58/month in fixed costs is covered at about 134 orders a month.
- Etsy also brings you buyers. The marketing budget is there to account for the traffic your own store has to earn — set it honestly.

How this works
Applies Etsy's published US fees to one order: the $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee on item and shipping, 3% + $0.25 payment processing on the total including tax, and Offsite Ads when they apply. The own-store comparison uses Stripe's standard US card rate.

FAQ
For US sellers: a $0.20 listing fee for each item sold, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and payment processing of 3% + $0.25 on the order total. If the buyer came through an Offsite Ad, there's an extra 15% (shops under $10,000 a year) or 12% (over $10,000), capped at $100 per order.
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee and the payment processing fee both apply to what you charge for shipping, not just the item price. That's why moving shipping into the item price doesn't avoid fees — it changes how the buyer sees the price.
Offsite Ads are ads Etsy runs on other sites for your listings. You only pay when a sale comes from one. Shops under $10,000 in yearly sales can opt out; above that, participation is required at the lower 12% rate. The monthly comparison lets you set what share of your orders come through them.
Per order, usually yes — card processing on your own store is typically well below Etsy's combined fees. But you pay hosting, apps and, most importantly, marketing every month, because Etsy's marketplace brings buyers and your own store doesn't. The comparison shows the order volume where your own store starts to win.
They were checked against Etsy's published fee policy in September 2026 for US sellers. Etsy occasionally changes fees, and sellers outside the US pay different processing rates and may pay a regulatory operating fee or a currency conversion fee if their shop and bank currencies differ. Always confirm with Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy.
