Selling printables, templates or patterns on Etsy looks like pure margin: no materials, no packaging, no trips to the post office. But Etsy's fees don't care that your product is a PDF. Two of them are fixed amounts per sale, and on a cheap download those fixed amounts take a painfully large share of the price. This guide shows which fees apply to digital items, how tax works on them, and what you actually keep at four common price points.
What are Etsy's fees for digital products?
For a US seller, a digital download pays the same fees as a physical item: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing of 3% + $0.25. Since there's no shipping, the total is simply $0.45 plus 9.5% of the price. On a $3 printable that's about $0.74, or 24.5% of the sale. On a $40 bundle it's $4.25, or 10.6%.
If the buyer came through one of Etsy's Offsite Ads, an extra 15% or 12% comes on top. More on that below.
Which Etsy fees apply to digital downloads, and which don't?
Here's how each fee in Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy applies to a digital item sold by a US shop:
| Fee | Applies to digital items? | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | Yes | $0.20 to publish or renew a listing, which lasts four months |
| Transaction fee | Yes | 6.5% of the item price, plus shipping and gift wrap if you charge them |
| Payment processing | Yes | 3% + $0.25 per order for US bank accounts, on the total including tax (Etsy Payments Policy) |
| Offsite Ads | Only on attributed orders | 15%, or 12% once a shop has reached $10,000 in sales over 365 days; capped at $100 per order |
| Shipping labels | No | Nothing to ship |
| Etsy Ads, Etsy Plus | Optional | Only if you choose to use them |
The only fee that really drops away is shipping. You don't buy labels, and the 6.5% transaction fee has no shipping charge to apply to. That's the full extent of the "digital discount."
Why is the listing fee a per-sale fee for downloads?
Most digital sellers list a download with a quantity above one, because the file never runs out. Etsy's help article on fees and multiple quantities explains what that does: when some of the quantity sells, the listing automatically renews and you're charged another $0.20. If a buyer takes more than one copy in the same order, you pay $0.20 for each extra copy.
So for a download, the $0.20 really does come with every sale. It also applies to listings that never sell. With automatic renewal on, each one costs $0.20 every four months while it's live, which works out to $0.60 a year per listing. A shop with 200 slow listings pays $120 a year just to keep them up.
How much do you keep from a $3, $8, $15 or $40 download?
For this example, assume a US seller, no shipping, no sales tax on the order, a quantity of one, and no Offsite Ad. Each fee is rounded to the cent here, so your own statement may differ by a penny:
| Price | Listing | Transaction (6.5%) | Processing (3% + $0.25) | Total fees | Fees as % of price | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $3 | $0.20 | $0.20 | $0.34 | $0.74 | 24.5% | $2.26 |
| $8 | $0.20 | $0.52 | $0.49 | $1.21 | 15.1% | $6.79 |
| $15 | $0.20 | $0.98 | $0.70 | $1.88 | 12.5% | $13.12 |
| $40 | $0.20 | $2.60 | $1.45 | $4.25 | 10.6% | $35.75 |
The percentage fees are identical at every price. What changes is the fixed $0.45. On a $40 bundle it's barely noticeable. On a $3 printable it's more than the transaction and processing percentages combined.
Now add an Offsite Ad at 15%, which applies to the whole order total when a buyer clicks one of Etsy's ads and buys within 30 days:
| Price | Total fees with a 15% Offsite Ad | Fees as % of price | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3 | $1.19 | 39.5% | $1.81 |
| $8 | $2.41 | 30.1% | $5.59 |
| $15 | $4.13 | 27.5% | $10.87 |
| $40 | $10.25 | 25.6% | $29.75 |
A $3 download that arrives through an Offsite Ad loses nearly 40% of its price. Shops that have never reached $10,000 in sales over a 365-day period can opt out. Our Offsite Ads guide covers the rules and when opting out makes sense. To check your own price, tax rate or ad scenario, put the numbers into the Etsy fee calculator with shipping and item cost set to $0.
How are sales tax and VAT handled on digital items?
You don't collect it yourself in most cases, but it does touch your fees.
US sales tax. Etsy's help center says it calculates, collects and remits US sales tax under state marketplace facilitator laws when a digital order is bought by a US buyer and meets certain criteria. You can't opt out, and there's no admin charge for it. Etsy's fee policy says it uses the category you gave the listing to work out the tax, so categorize your downloads correctly. The sales tax help article also notes that Colorado's retail delivery fee is charged only on physical goods, not digital ones.
VAT for buyers outside the US. Buyers in a long list of places, including the EU, the UK, Canada and Australia, pay VAT on digital downloads. Etsy's digital VAT help page says it adds the VAT to the listing price automatically, and that sellers aren't responsible for adding it to their prices. With Etsy Payments, the VAT is deducted from the order before the money reaches your payment account.
How tax affects your fees. For US sellers, the fee policy says the 6.5% transaction fee and the Offsite Ads fee don't apply to sales tax. Payment processing is different: it's assessed on the total sale, including tax. For this example, assume a $10 download bought by a buyer who is charged 20% VAT. Processing is then 3% of $12 plus $0.25, or $0.61, rather than $0.55 on a tax-free order. A few cents per sale, but it's there.
Should you bundle digital products instead of selling them singly?
Usually, yes, if the items belong together. Bundling cuts the number of fixed fees you pay. For this example, assume four printables priced at $3 each against a four-pack listed at $12:
| How the buyer purchases | Etsy fees | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Four separate $3 orders | $2.94 | $9.06 |
| Four $3 listings in one cart | $2.19 | $9.81 |
| One $12 bundle listing | $1.59 | $10.41 |
Buying all four in one cart already helps, because the $0.25 processing charge is per order. You still pay four listing renewals, though. The bundle pays one of each fixed fee, so you keep $1.35 more than you would on four separate orders.
Two Etsy rules shape how you bundle. According to Etsy's digital listings help page, you can't offer variations on digital items, so "single" and "bundle" have to be separate listings, and each one pays its own listing fee. An instant download can also hold at most five files of up to 20MB each. For bigger bundles, combine files into a .zip, which is on Etsy's list of supported file types.
What's the minimum price for a digital download on Etsy?
There's no fixed floor, but you can work one out. Because fees are $0.45 plus 9.5% of the price, the fee share only falls as the price rises:
| Price | Fees as % of price (no Offsite Ad) |
|---|---|
| $2 | 32.0% |
| $4.29 | 20% |
| $8.18 | 15% |
| $20 | 11.8% |
Pick the share you're willing to give up and price above it. Or work backwards from what you want to keep: the formula from our Etsy pricing guide is price = (amount you want to keep + $0.45) ÷ 0.905. To keep $5 from each sale, you'd list at about $6.02.
Keep in mind that "keep" isn't the same as profit. Design time, fonts or graphics you license, mockups and any Etsy Ads spend still come out of it. A download with no cost per copy still costs you something to make.
