How Much Does It Cost to Open an Etsy Shop? Setup Fee, Listings and Your First Sales

Etsy doesn't charge a monthly fee for a standard shop, but opening one isn't free. There's now a one-time setup fee, every listing costs money whether it sells or not, and fees on your first orders come out before you see a cent. This guide adds up what it costs a US seller to go from no shop to the first few sales, with optional extras kept separate.

How much does it cost to open an Etsy shop?

Opening an Etsy shop costs a one-time, non-refundable setup fee plus $0.20 for each listing you publish. Etsy announced the setup fee at $15, but its help center now says the amount varies by location and is shown before you finish setup. Once you sell, US sellers pay a 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 payment processing on each order. A new shop with 10 listings pays about $27 to Etsy by the end of its third $30 sale.

Everything beyond that (Etsy Plus, Etsy Ads, packaging, photography) is optional or depends on how you run the shop.

What is the Etsy shop setup fee?

When Etsy introduced the fee in February 2024, it said some new shops would pay a one-time fee of $15 before opening, to fund enhanced security checks and support for new sellers. It only applies to newly created shops, though that can include a second shop opened by an existing seller.

The current wording is looser. Etsy's fees and taxes help article says the setup fee's cost varies by location, and Etsy doesn't publish a country-by-country list. The Fees & Payments Policy adds a few details worth knowing:

  • The fee is shown and charged during shop setup, and you may not be required to pay it at all. Etsy can waive it during promotions.
  • It's charged to your card, not taken from future sales. The charge is processed once onboarding is complete and your shop can take orders.
  • It's non-refundable once paid, and taxes may be added depending on where your bank account is.

So the honest answer on the setup fee is: budget $15, and check the "Total due now" line in the setup flow for the exact figure in your country.

What else do you pay before your first sale?

Cost Amount (US seller) When it's charged
Shop setup fee Shown during setup ($15 when announced) Once, when you open the shop
Listing fee $0.20 per listing Each time you publish or renew a listing
Listing renewal $0.20 Every four months, if auto-renew is on
Identity verification No fee listed During setup
Monthly fee None on Etsy Standard —

Listing fees are the one recurring cost you pay even with zero sales. Etsy's Fee Basics confirms the $0.20 is charged whether or not the item sells, and the Fees & Payments Policy says listings expire after four months. With automatic renewal on, 10 listings that sit unsold for a year cost $2.00 to publish plus $4.00 in two renewals.

Do you need to verify your identity?

Yes. Etsy's guide to opening a shop says you'll verify through Persona using a photo of a government ID and a selfie, and the ID must match the name on the bank account you connect. You also need a card on file for Etsy bills and two-factor authentication. Etsy's fee policy lists no charge for any of these steps.

What does Etsy charge on your first sale?

The same fees as on any other sale. For a US shop, the Fees & Payments Policy sets the transaction fee at 6.5% of the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, and Etsy's Payments Policy lists US payment processing at 3% + $0.25, calculated on the total including shipping and sales tax. If the listing is set to auto-renew when it sells, or it's a multi-quantity listing, Etsy charges another $0.20 to relist it.

Shops also take part in Offsite Ads unless they opt out. If a sale comes through one, you pay an extra 15% of the order, capped at $100, unless you opt out while your shop is under $10,000 in yearly sales. Our Offsite Ads guide explains the opt-out rules, and how much Etsy takes per sale breaks down the regular fees at different price points.

What does it cost to open a shop with 10 listings?

For this example, assume:

  • You're a US seller and the setup flow charges the $15 fee Etsy announced
  • You publish 10 listings at $0.20 each
  • Your first three orders are each a $25 item plus $5 shipping ($30), with no sales tax
  • Each listing is set to auto-renew, so each sale triggers a $0.20 renewal
  • None of the three orders came through an Offsite Ad
Cost Calculation Amount
Setup fee One-time $15.00
10 listings 10 × $0.20 $2.00
Transaction fees, 3 sales 6.5% × $30 × 3 $5.85
Payment processing, 3 sales (3% × $30 + $0.25) × 3 $3.45
Renewals on sold listings 3 × $0.20 $0.60
Total paid to Etsy $26.90

Your three buyers paid $90, and Etsy's cut from those sales is $9.90, or $3.30 an order. The other $17 is the cost of opening: setup plus your first 10 listings.

Sales tax would nudge processing up slightly, and an order from an Offsite Ad at 15% would add $4.50. The Etsy fee calculator lets you change the price, shipping, tax rate and ad status to see the fees and profit on your own first order.

What optional costs should you budget for?

Etsy Plus. A $10-a-month subscription. According to the Fees & Payments Policy, each month includes 15 listing credits (worth $3) and $5 in Etsy Ads credits. Credits don't roll over. If you'd use both anyway, the subscription really costs you about $2 a month for its extra tools; if you wouldn't, it's $10.

Etsy Ads. On-site ads you pay for per click, up to a daily budget you set. Etsy's Ads help article says all sellers start with a maximum daily budget of $25, and you're never charged more than your daily budget. New shops also wait 15 days after opening before they can start a campaign, so ads can't be part of launch day anyway. You can spend nothing here while you learn which listings get views.

Shipping labels. Optional to buy through Etsy; the price depends on carrier, weight, size and destination. It comes out of your balance even when the buyer paid for shipping.

Packaging and photography. Not Etsy fees, but hard to skip entirely. A phone and a window can produce good photos, but if you sell physical products, mailers can't be avoided.

What's a realistic startup budget?

The Etsy fees below are from Etsy's own pages. The packaging, photography and ad figures are example amounts for planning, not market prices. Swap in your own.

Cost Minimum Comfortable
Shop setup fee $15 $15
Listings 10 × $0.20 = $2 30 × $0.20 = $6
Etsy Plus (first month) $0 $10
Etsy Ads (example: $1/day for 30 days) $0 $30
Packaging supplies (example) $20 $60
Photography (example: backdrop and light) $0 $40
Total before inventory $37 $161

In the comfortable column, Etsy Plus credits would cover $3 of the listing fees and $5 of the ad spend, bringing the real total closer to $153.

Neither column includes materials or stock. Those belong in your product cost, and in your prices. Pricing your products so Etsy's fees don't eat your profit shows how to build them in.

Should you plan for any cash-flow gaps?

Yes. In the same 2024 announcement, Etsy said it was exploring changes to payment schedules for new shops until they have a proven sales record, which may mean waiting longer for funds to become available. Your own schedule is shown in Shop Manager after onboarding. Keep enough cash to cover materials and labels for your first several orders before their money lands.

If you're comparing Etsy's low entry cost with running your own site, Etsy vs Shopify vs WooCommerce fees shows where the monthly costs cross over.

FAQ

Not quite. New shops may pay a one-time setup fee (announced at $15, shown during setup) and $0.20 per listing. There's no required monthly fee on Etsy Standard.
Not necessarily. Etsy's fee policy says new shops "may be required" to pay it, the help center says the amount varies by location, and Etsy can waive it during promotional periods. If you owe it, the amount appears before you finish setting up the shop.
No. Etsy's fee policy says the setup fee is non-refundable once paid, like its other service fees.
Etsy needs one listing before your shop opens, and each costs $0.20. Ten well-photographed listings cost $2 and give buyers enough to browse, so the fee isn't a reason to launch with fewer.

The setup fee and listings are small, fixed and easy to plan for. The per-sale fees are what shape your profit for as long as the shop is open, so run your first product's numbers before you set its price.
